Program details
This comprehensive full-day tour is an ideal introduction to the natural and archaeological wonders of Cappadocia. Hike through one of the most region's most spectacular valleys, visit cave dwellings, ancient churches and underground cities and sample the local wine.
After we pick you up from your hotel in the morning we'll drive you to the spectacular Red valley where you can hike 5km through magnificent scenery studded with colourful rock stacks. Finally we'll reach the hilltop settlement of Cavusin where you can visit the 5th Century Church of St John the Baptist, as well as the Church of Nicephorus Phocas, a comparative newcomer dating from the 10th Century.
After lunch in a local restaurant we'll make the climb to the Fortress of Ortahisar for some amazing views over the surrounding area. In the afternoon we'll drive to Kaymakli. This amazing underground city was first carved out by the Hittites over 3500 years ago and then used by early Christians as a shelter from their persecutors during the 6th and 7th centuries. Wander around this mind-boggling rabbit-warren made up of hundreds of chambers over eight levels connected by a network of passages, tunnels and stairs.
On the way back to the hotel we'll pass through Pigeon Valley to see hundreds of cave dwellings before making one last stop at the Turasan Wine Cellars in Urgup where you can taste some of the local tipple.
