Day 1:
ALFEDENA (-/-/D)
Our Italy is beautiful and rich in history; those who love horseback riding holidays cannot miss a trekking adventure in Abruzzo. Few people know that these lands, before the Roman Empire, were inhabited by Italic peoples: the Samnites, the Marsi, the Peligni, the Piceni... the twelve brave peoples of the central Apennines who, at the time, united to build their dream of freedom against Roman hegemony.
The image and knowledge of the Samnite people are almost automatically associated with the Samnite Wars, especially the episode at the Caudine Forks, where Roman soldiers, unexpectedly defeated by the Samnites, were forced to bow under the most famous yoke.
For centuries, the domination of Southern Italy was hindered by this people: no other adversary caused Rome as many problems and concerns, and none came as close to contesting Roman supremacy over the Italian territory.
We will ride through these lands, steeped in history and ancient blood spilled in numerous battles.
We will be based in Alfedena, an ancient Samnite center; the town rises adjacent to the medieval castle of Prince Caracciolo of Cellammare, where the walls and the Norman Tower with an octagonal base dating back to the 10th century are still visible. A significant local tradition is the working of stone: cobblestones, doorframes, and external steps can be seen in the streets of the town. To commemorate the importance of the stonecutter’s figure, a monument to the stonecutter has been erected in the Municipal Villa.
Arrival in the afternoon, transfer from the Isernia train station to the riding center (on request at 7:45 PM). Welcome drink, dinner with the guides, and overnight stay.
Day 2:
ALFEDENA (B/L/D)
Free morning. Before lunch, meet with the guides to explain the route and a brief demonstration on how to saddle with an American saddle. After lunch, we will ride for a 3-hour walk so that the riders can get acquainted with their horses. Dinner and overnight stay.
Day 3:
ALFEDENA (B/L/D)
Breakfast and departure around 10 AM. After passing through a dense forest, we cross many fields where we can gallop. The picnic is held in an idyllic spot with a beautiful view overlooking the town of Vastogirardi. We continue our ride through a beech forest, and at the end, we reach “Valle Fredda,” where we take a long gallop. In the evening, a delicious dinner will be served by our host.
Day 4:
VALLE FREDDDA/ALFEDENA (B/L/D)
Today, we descend towards the town of Carovilli. Here, we tie the horses and have an aperitif in the square, enjoying the atmosphere of the town. We then continue to Castiglione, a hamlet of Carovilli nearby. At the top of the hill is the ruin of the old church with its bell tower, still with a working bell, where we stop for a picnic. From here, we can see the landscape of the surrounding valley. After lunch, we return to the farm, and the rest of the afternoon is free. You can relax on a hammock at our Bistrot with a book, or unwind by the fireplace. If the weather allows, you can visit the nearby swimming pool or go to the Pescolanciano Castle. Dinner and overnight stay at the farm.
Day 5:
ALFEDENA (B/L/D)
We cross the forest and descend to the stream. After crossing it, there is a steep climb. Around noon, we reach a hill where we can enjoy the view of the town of Agnone in Molise. Here, we stop for a picnic. After lunch, we descend towards the town of Pietrabbondante. In the archaeological area, there are well-preserved remains of a theater and two Samnite temples. After visiting the archaeological site, we return to the farm for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 6:
ALFEDENA (B/L/D)
After breakfast, we saddle up for Pescolanciano. Before entering the town, we follow a stretch of the Tratturo, which is still intact in this area. From here, we can enjoy a beautiful view of the castle that dominates the town. Just before crossing the town, there is the chance to gallop in the fields. Lunch will be served at a small local restaurant. After lunch, we can relax at the nearby pool. The final kilometers will take us through heathlands and oak forests along the Trigno River valley, where there will be opportunities for long gallops. In the evening, we return to the farm, unsaddle for the last time, and enjoy the farewell dinner.
Day 7:
ALFEDENA / ISERNIA (B/-/-)
After breakfast, at 8:50 AM, transfer (Euro 25 payable on-site) to the Isernia train station or independent departure.
Note:
The itinerary above is indicative and may be subject to changes due to weather conditions or circumstances beyond our control. In case of heavy bad weather, alternative activities such as a visit to the Bell Museum in Agnone, the Pescolanciano Castle, or a Western riding lesson in the covered arena may be offered.
On request, it is possible to do a shortened version of the itinerary (3, 4, or 5 nights) – pricing available upon request.
