Nicknamed the "subterranean city" for its rock-hewn buildings, Matera is in the Basilicata region of southern Italy. The biggest draw is the "Sassi", a multi-level network of cavern houses. Book with us the private tour "Sassi of Matera - the most unique landscape in Europe".
It is a full-day tour (around 10 hours) thanks to which you can visit one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. You cannot miss the visit of Rione Sassi that's an entire district of homes, churches narrow alleys and stairways. the facade of the homes were built of stones but inside they are simple caves carved into the natural rock where families lived alongside their livestock till fifties and without electricity or running water.
After the 2 hours of Calessino tour you can have a food tasting in a typical local restaurant and free time to discover the little ancient city on your own. Than, meet you driver and back to you departure place.
