This service includes a private vehicle with driver and licensed guide. Since this is a private tour, we can tailor make the tour as you wish. You can discuss the places you would like to visit in the island of Gozo directly with the guide on the day of the tour. In general, we suggest the below itinerary for a full-day tour in Gozo:
We will start our day with a visit to the National shrine of the Blessed Virgin of Ta Pinu which is a Roman Catholic basilica. Its origins go back to a day in June in 1883, when a woman heard the voice of the Virgin Mary in an old chapel. In the following years, many miracles and acts of grace were manifested at the site. Many believe that the prayers said in the chapel saved Gozo from the plague, which had stricken Malta at that time. The locals therefore decided to build a larger and more magnificent church on the site in honour of the Blessed Virgin. In 1931, Ta’ Pinu was consecrated and a year later Pope Pius XI raised it to the status of Basilica. The original 16th century chapel was fully integrated into the new church.
We will then proceed to Dwejra Bay. Dwejra, with its dramatic coastal formations and sea spilling over the rocks, is a magical attraction. Dwejra is also home of the Fungus Rock or, as it is locally known, “Il-Ġebla tal-Ġeneral”. It is so called in remembrance of the Italian General who centuries ago fell to his death while supervising quarrying in the area. History tells us that a special plant believed to have medicinal and healing properties used to grow on Fungus Rock and because of this the Rock used to be heavily guarded during the era of the Knights of Malta. Anyone caught stealing the crop was sentenced to death or to a life rowing the Knights’ galleys.
Following Dwejra, we will visit the Citadel which is an ancient fortified city at the centre of the Island. Cittadella is made up of a maze of quaint streets, weaving in and around the bastions surrounding the town and its towering fortifications afford superb views over the whole Island. Within the Citadel are many of the main historical sites of Victoria including the Cathedral Museum, the Museum of Archaeology, the Folklore Museum, the Gozo Nature Museum, the Old Prison, the Old Gunpowder Magazine, the Grain Silos, the Battery and the World War II Shelter.
We will also visit the world’s oldest free-standing temples of Ggantija, a UNESCO world heritage site. Ġgantija Temples are one of the most important archaeological sites in the world and date from around 3600 to 3200 BC. This majestic site, situated in lush countryside, is made up of two massive temples. The rocks are so large that it is not a surprise that many locals used to believe that they were built by giants. The entrance tickets to Ggantija temples is not included and can be paid at the door.
Finally we will drive to Mgarr Port via Qala Belvedere where breath-taking scenes can be enjoyed of the Maltese Archipelago. The Belvedere of Qala offers spectacular views of Comino, Cominotto and the Blue Lagoon set in-between the two major islands. On the left- hand side of the Belvedere we observe a church with small courtyard. This is dedicated to Our Lady of the Rocks. Legend has it that it was built for the people of Comino to follow Holy Mass from across the sea when rough weather prohibited the priest from being ferried by boat.
